Role

Art Director & Brand Designer

Year

2017-2019

Founded in 1997 by magician Marcelo Insúa, Bar Mágico lives inside an Argentinean Art Deco house built in 1907. It welcomes guests with a hallway of vintage magic posters and a grand stage, setting the tone for what’s to come. At the back of the venue lies “The Room of Lies”, an intimate space designed for close-up magic that leaves no room for distraction—or doubt.

Over the years, Bar Mágico evolved from being Latin America’s first café-concert dedicated to magic, to one of the most iconic venues in the world. It now stands alongside giants like the Magic Castle in Los Angeles and the Houdini Magic Club in Madrid. Legendary names—René Lavand, Juan Tamariz, Patrick Page, Lennart Green—have performed here.

1. The Pledge

Goals
  • Preserve the Legacy: Update the brand while honoring its heritage and deep emotional connection with the magic community.

  • Unify Touchpoints: Bring visual consistency to all elements—tickets, programs, digital content, signage—without diluting the mystique.

  • Enhance Experience: Ensure the brand design contributes to the overall sense of immersion, wonder, and reverence for magic.

Key Metrics
  • Audience Engagement: Track feedback from the community, social media shares, and ticket sales after launch.

  • Brand Consistency: Apply identity cohesively across both physical space and digital communication.

  • Cultural Resonance: Maintain credibility among magicians and aficionados globally.

2. The Turn

My Approach

A unique place where reality and illusion blend in perfect harmony. Bar Mágico is not just a bar—it’s a stage, a sanctuary, and a playground for wonder. From the first sketch to the final signage, this was a passion project that allowed me to merge two of my biggest worlds: design and magic.

Concepts
  • Timeless Enchantment: Combine classic and contemporary elements to reflect the longevity of Bar Mágico’s story.

  • Layered Mystery: Design should echo the experience of a great magic routine—seemingly simple at first, but full of details on closer look.

  • Emotional Immersion: Guests should feel like they’ve stepped into a world apart—a sacred place for magic lovers.

  • Visual Identity: I crafted a refined wordmark and symbol inspired by antique magic paraphernalia, illusionist typography, and stage aesthetics. The new logo balances elegance and playfulness—much like the performances themselves.

  • Color & Texture: Used a palette of rich burgundy, gold, and shadowy tones to evoke mystery and intimacy, paired with textures inspired by velvet curtains, aged wood, and inked paper.

  • Printed Collateral: Designed programs, show posters, business cards, and signage that feel collectible and theatrical—souvenirs of a night to remember.

  • Environmental Branding: Worked with the team to subtly infuse brand elements throughout the space—without overwhelming the original Art Deco beauty or magical artifacts on display.

  • Digital Presence: Provided direction for social templates and online materials to maintain coherence between the physical venue and digital outreach.

3. The Prestige

Key Learnings
  • Bar Mágico wasn’t just a branding challenge—it was a responsibility. Every decision needed to respect the culture and history of a space that’s revered by magicians worldwide.

  • Designing for magic means thinking like a magician: setting expectations, misdirecting with elegance, and leaving room for awe.

  • The emotional resonance of design matters deeply when the product is an experience, not just a service.

Success Metrics
  • Community Response: The redesign was enthusiastically embraced by the magic community and became part of the 20+ year legacy celebrations.

  • Cohesive Identity: The updated visuals are now present across all brand expressions—from tickets to Tango Magic products—creating a unified narrative.

  • Cultural Preservation: The project reaffirmed Bar Mágico’s status as a temple of magic—respected, inspiring, and internationally recognized.

Conclusion

This was one of the most meaningful projects of my career—not just because of the design challenges, but because of what it stood for. Bar Mágico is a place where childhood dreams and adult admiration converge. Where secrets are protected, illusions are celebrated, and stories are whispered in sleight of hand. And now, its brand identity speaks that same language.
